Our Founder
St Arnold Janssen
Saint Arnold Janssen was born in a devoutly Catholic family in Goch, Germany in 1837. He founded The Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in 1875 and co-founded two orders of religious women, the Missionary Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) in 1889, and the cloistered Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (SSpSAP) in 1896.
Since 1896 in PNG
The SVD first came to PNG on 13th August 1896 at Madang and later to Tumleo Island, Aitape in West Sepik, where they started their mission. The SVDs are fully involved in the service of our Spiritual and Social needs; specifically in education and health.
Our Mission
Divine Word Missionaries serve the spiritual and social needs of people on six of the seven continents with over 80 regions and countries. Our membership worldwide is more than 6,000 priests and brothers. Prophesy dialogue has always been an important component of our work.
